Alleged Gothenburg rioter due in court

A British man suspected of being a ringleader in the Gothenburg riots was due to appear in court today charged with violent rioting and assault.

Paul Robinson, 32, has been held in custody since he was arrested on June 15 during protests at the Council of Europe talks.

The riots caused damage of around £7m and were Sweden’s worst in living memory.

Robinson, a librarian from Camden, north London, first appeared in court on June 17 after he was detained for a weekend with 100 other protesters at police headquarters.

When he appears at a Gothenburg court, he will rely on a lawyer and translator provided by the Swedish authorities.

He could face up to 10 years in jail.
