Kennedy sister injured in head-on crash

A sister of assassinated US President John Kennedy had been admitted to hospital with a broken leg after a head-on car collision.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver, 79, was today in good condition after surgery, said Cape Cod Hospital spokeswoman Deborah Dougherty.

Police say Shriver was driving in Hyannis, Massachusetts, when a pick-up truck turned and struck her 1986 Jeep Cherokee head-on.

The truck’s 20-year-old driver was cited for making an illegal turn. He was not injured.

‘‘He felt bad,’’ said police Sergeant Sean Sweeney. ‘‘He said, ‘I dn’t see the signs’’’

Shriver was cited for not wearing her seatbelt and driving a vehicle with expired registration.
