Bigamist’s sentencing postponed over deviance

Sentencing of a man convicted of bigamy was postponed today because of a dispute over whether he should be tested for sexual deviance.

Judge Guy Burningham said in Salt Lake City he would give Tom Green a chance next Wednesday to say why he opposes the evaluation.

Green, who was found guilty last month of four counts of bigamy and one count of failure to pay child support, could receive up to 25 years in prison and $25,000 in fines.

"He wasn’t convicted of a crime involving sex abuse," defence lawyer John Bucher said.

Prosecutors have said bigamy could be seen as a sex crime because Green married young girls.

Green is charged with child rape for allegedly having sex with one of his five wives when she was 13. A hearing on that charge was scheduled for August 23.

Green’s sentencing on the bigamy and child support convictions was pushed back to August 24. It had been scheduled for next Wednesday.
