Vandals have sprayed anti-Jewish slogans and thrown axes into a picture of Christ in a building next to Auschwitz.

The offenders also ripped out wiring and caused some $12,000 in damages to the former Catholic nunnery building by the Nazi death camp.

The building is located across the wall from the former camp where Nazis killed more than one million Jews during the Second World War and served as a convent from 1984-1993.

Following vehement protests from Jews around the world, who said the nuns' presence hurt the memory of the Jewish victims, the nuns moved on orders from the Vatican.
