Race is on for first poll result in British election

Up to 20 constituencies in Britain will be racing to be first with general election results tonight.

The favourite is the safe Labour seat of Sunderland South, clear winner in both 1992 and 1997.

Its declaration last time came just 43 minutes after polling stations closed at 10pm, and Junior International Development Minister Chris Mullin could once more be the first MP elected.
