Clean up under way after night of violence in Leeds

A clean-up operation is under way in the Harehills area of Leeds after a night of violence.

Four people have been arrested in connection with the disturbances.

Police were called to the Banstead park area of Leeds to reports of petrol bombs being thrown into the road, they attended but there was no trace of any incident.

Police say this appears to have been premeditated and an attack on police and property then followed, 25 cars were burnt out, one shop was badly damaged by fire, two officers were slightly injured as a result of missiles being thrown at them and a number of police cars were also damaged by missiles.

The situation calmed at around 2.15am.

"At this stage we do not know the reason for this disorder, but we are determined to focus our efforts on catching those responsible," said a West Yorkshire police spokesman.

"A senior detective and other officers have been appointed to gather evidence and catch these criminals, whose actions are not supported by the community.

"There is a great deal of evidence for officers to work through and further arrests are anticipated."
