Rebel Republican to cost Bush control of Senate

American president George W Bush was today bracing himself for the blow of his party losing control of the Senate.

The president faces embarrassment later today when Vermont senator Jim Jeffords is almost certain to announce he is quitting the Republican party and becoming an independent member of the American Congress’s upper house.
