Defection to cost Bush control of Senate - report

A Republican senator is reported to be preparing to defect, handing control of the Senate to the Democrats and dealing President George W Bush a devastating blow.

According to sources, Vermont Senator James Jeffords has said that once the tax cut bill passes he will travel to the White House and tell President Bush he will join the Democratic party.
