Huge demand from Europe because of foot-and-mouth disease is forcing lamb off family dinner tables in New Zealand as prices soar, officials said today.

Lamb prices are at record highs as demand from Europe outstrips supplies, said butcher Peter Mitchell. A leg of lamb now costs up to 30 New Zealand dollars (£8), he said.
