Five people, including three foreigners, were killed and 22 others injured when a Spanish bus drove off a motorway into a ditch today.

The bus, carrying 36 people, was travelling from Madrid to the southwestern port city of Algeciras.

The accident occurred around 0130 BST when the bus careered off the motorway into a central dividing ditch outside the town of Santa Cruz de Mudela, police said.

The dead were identified as a Moroccan father and son, two Spaniards and a 24-year-old American.

The accident occurred during heavy overnight rains. Most of the passengers were believed to be sleeping when it happened.
