US Vice President Dick Cheney has rejected Pope John Paul II's request that the Oklahoma City bomber's life should be spared.

Timothy McVeigh, 33, is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on May 16 in Indiana, for the bombing of the Alfred P Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.
