Tornado tears through Kansas town

At least one person died and 32 others were injured when a tornado hit a central Kansas town, ripping the roof off a hospital and damaging several blocks of homes.

The twister damaged several blocks in northern Hoisington and tore the roof off Clara Barton Hospital. The hospital had to be closed because of serious damage.

Duane Koester said his house was the only one left standing in his neighbourhood.

‘‘Right where I’m at, when I look west, there’s not a thing standing,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s down to rubble. Trees are down to sticks.’’

The town of about 3,000 people was without power after the tornado hit.
