Paul McCartney makes 'adopt a landmine' appeal

Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney and his girlfriend Heather Mills appealed to a celebrity-studded New York audience to open their wallets and ‘‘adopt-a-minefield’’ so their dream of a world without landmines can become a reality.

The pop legend asked the 200 guests last night to imagine living in a country where there had been a terrible war and after it ended being unable to walk on the beach or in the countryside for fear of stepping on a mine and being killed or severely injured.
