Gadget to reduce long-distance travel risk launched

A device aiming to reduce the risk of passengers on long haul flights developing potentially fatal blood clots is being heralded by a London scientist.

The Airogym is a small inflatable cushion which its maker says reduces the risk of deep vein thrombosis.

Emirates Airline, the Dubai based international carrier, will be the first to distribute Airogyms free of charge to all its passengers.

The condition, which is also known as economy class syndrome, is thought to be caused by lack of movement owing to cramped conditions and dehydration made worse by dry air.

It involves the formation of blood clots in the legs caused by sitting in cramped conditions for long periods.

The handbag-sized item was designed by pilot Paul Richards and has been tested by leading British vascular surgeon, John Scurr.

Mr Scurr, consultant vascular surgeon at the Middlesex and University College Hospitals, London, said: "The scientific tests that we have conducted show that the Airogym improves blood flow by between 25% and 50%.

"This increased blood flow certainly prohibits venous stasis and in turn should reduce the risk of development of potentially dangerous blood clots."

Makers say the product increases the blood flow through the deep veins by up to 50%, reducing the risk of blood clots.

The device works by the user pressing down on an inflatable footpad which compresses the veins in the foot.

The pressure involved in squeezing the foot causes muscular contraction of the calf muscles which promotes the flow of blood through the main veins to the heart.

Passengers can choose whether to remove their socks and shoes while using the Airogym.

Dr Alasdair Beatton, head of medical services at Emirates Airline, said: "The health and welfare of our customers is our top priority.

"The Airogym is a significant product as it is a simple and fun way of exercising whilst seated."
