Harry Secombe dies of cancer

Sir Harry Secombe has died aged 79, his daughter Jenny has announced.

The Welsh comedian, writer, singer and latterly the presenter of religious programme, Highway, has died of prostrate cancer at home.

He had suffered a stroke in 1999, after which he retired from showbusiness.

Sir Harry's rise to fame began in the post-war years when he became a celebrated radio star with The Goon Show.

He met fellow goon Spike Milligan while he was in the forces during the Second World War. Peter Sellers and Michael Bentine were the other members.

Spike Milligan has given a personal tribute to his long-time friend. "I grieve for an unbelievable friend," the comedian said.

As a comedian and singer he starred as Mr Bumble in Dickens' Oliver Twist and took the lead of Pickwick on stage.

For his contribution to charitable causes he was knighted in 1991. He entertained the troops during the Gulf War and received rapturous applause during the VE Day anniversary celebrations.
