Cammell Laird calls in the recievers

Shipbuilder Cammell Laird has called in the receivers, the company said today.

Workers leaving the yard at 4.30pm said they had not heard any news about Cammell Laird’s future.

As hundreds of cars streamed out of the riverside plant, one worker, who did not wish to be named, said: ‘‘Nothing has been decided, we know nothing.’’

Apprentice electrician Gary Dobson, 24, who lives in Hebburn, said: ‘‘I’m just hoping things will pick up again, it’s a pretty worrying time but we have been told to carry on as normal.’’
