Baby Spice is top of the pops

Spice Girl Emma Bunton is celebrating her first solo number one single after knocking Hear'Say off the top of the charts.

Bunton said she was delighted with the success of her single, What Took You So Long, which ended three weeks at the top for the Popstars.

Her 1999 collaboration with Tin Tin Out, What I Am, only reached number two and was beaten to the top spot by Geri Halliwell's Lift Me Up.

"I'm thrilled to bits," she said. "This is a wonderful feeling. I am gob smacked that this has done so well and want to say a really big thank you to my fans."

Fellow Spice Girls Mel B and Mel C have also topped the charts with their solo efforts. Only Victoria Beckham has failed to achieve a solo number one.

In Sunday's chart, Bunton, 25, also outsold Elvis, whose live version of Suspicious Minds - released by record company RCA - only reached number 15.

If he reaches the top of the charts it will be his 18th number one. He currently ties with the Beatles with 17 number one hits each.
