Corrie's Alma to die from cancer

Coronation Street's Alma is to die from terminal cancer.

The character will discover she has advanced cervical cancer just as she decides to leave Weatherfield to start a new life with security guard Frank O'Conner.

Actress Amanda Barrie asked to leave the soap last November after 20 years. Producers say she is thrilled at the storyline they have planned.

There will be an emotional moment as Alma tells best friend Audrey Roberts she has the disease. Rather than move to the countryside with Frank, Alma decides to stay in Weatherfield.

The scenes will be screened next month.
