Japanese PM announces resignation

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori has told his Cabinet that he has made up his mind to resign.

The widely unpopular Mr Mori had been long expected to resign. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party is planning to hold a leadership election later this month that would choose a successor.
