French strikes cause nationwide chaos

French rail passengers, hit by another round of crippling strikes, faced major delays today as railway workers staged a 24-hour nationwide stoppage to press for pay increases.

After nearly two weeks of sporadic strikes, the country’s five most powerful rail unions called today’s protest to coincide with a meeting in Paris between workers and the head of the state-run rail authority, SNCF.
