Stephen Soderbergh wins Best Director

Stephen Soderbergh has won the Best Director Oscar for Traffic.

The award had been expected to go to either Ridley Scott or Ang Lee.

Soderbergh had been nominated twice for both Traffic and Erin Brockovich.

He told the audience: "Suddenly going to work tomorrow doesn't seem like such a good idea".

"I wanna thank anyone who spends part of their day creating."

"I don't care if it's a book, a film, a dance, a painting, a piece of theatre, a piece of music, anybody who spends part of their day sharing their experience with us. I think this world would be unliveable without art."
