UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has urged Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to reduce tensions by easing the closure of Palestinian territories.

Sharon said he would do so as security permits, and in a speech to Jewish leaders yesterday, he called Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat the "main obstacle" to peace after six months of violent clashes.
