At least two people have been killed and another is missing after an avalanche hit the French Alps.
The avalanche struck above the village of Thones, in the southeastern Haute-Savoie region on Monday afternoon. Rescuers have pulled two bodies from the snow, which is 10 metres deep in some areas.
The dead are two hikers from the nearby Annecy region and Villeurbanne, in the Rhone region. No further details were given.
Police said they believe at least one more person was swept away in the avalanche. Around 50 rescue workers were still searching the region around the Tournette mountain on Tuesday.
