Indian opposition suspends parliament

Opposition politicians have paralysed the Indian parliament, insisting the coalition government resign over an arms bribery scandal.

Lower house Speaker Ganti Balayogi temporarily adjourned the chamber after politicians led by the main opposition Congress party began calling for the government to quit.

The opposition has been demanding the government step down since an undercover documentary released last week alleged a string of politicians, bureaucrats and top army officials had accepted money to influence a fictitious arms deal.

The scandal has already claimed the country's defence minister and the chiefs of two political parties including that of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which leads the 17-month-old coalition.
