Sphinx 'could crumble within 25 years'

The Great Sphinx could collapse within 25 years because of techniques designed to save it.

Egyptologists say the wrong chemicals and shoddy workmanship are to blame. Restoration work started in 1988 when a block of stone fell from its shoulder.

British-based Ahmad Osman and Dr Ali el-Kholy, former head of Egypt's Board of Antiquities, say workers have ignored major problems.

Around 12,000 limestone blocks have been used to shore up the statue's stomach, legs and paws but the new stone was simply used to cover decaying parts of the statue.

Other deteriorating parts of the 4,500-year-old statue were left untreated, The Independent On Sunday reports.

"The Sphinx ... seems to be approaching the end of its life. Unless revolutionary steps are taken it will disintegrate in 25 years," Osman says.
