Mandelson 'relieved' at Hammond report verdict

Peter Mandelson says he read the Hammond report into the Hinduja passport affair with a great sense of gratitude and considerable relief.

The former Northern Ireland Secretary described the Hinduja affair as a muddle rather than a misrepresentation.

He said he regretted his part in creating that muddle and would now concentrate of securing the trust of his Hartlepool constituents.

He added: "I did not lie, I did not deceive and I did not set out to mislead. I'm grateful to Sir Anthony for clearing my name and restoring my reputation."

He continued: "I feel I can now draw a line under these events."

He said he doesn't want to return to Government.

After he had read his statement he refused to answer reporters' questions.
