Eminem fan hanged herself after drinking ban

A 13-year-old Eminem fan hanged herself in her bedroom after being sent home from school for drinking alcohol, an inquest has heard.

Kayleigh Davies was described by her father as being "infatuated" with the rap star whose songs often refer to suicide.

Martin Davies found his daughter hanging from a belt attached to the top cupboard of a fitted unit in her room on December 20 last year.

Recording a verdict of suicide, Central Hampshire coroner Grahame Short said he did not know how much she had been influenced by Eminem and by another favourite, Dr Dre.

She was found surrounded by her diaries and a bottle of Bacardi Breezer. The diaries contained thoughts of suicide and drawings of hangings but she left no note.

Giving evidence to the Winchester hearing, Mr Davies said Kayleigh had been grounded for smoking the previous night and they had argued but made up.

He had returned to his home in Eastleigh, Hants in the mid afternoon of the day of his daughter's death after going to Southampton with his son to buy a suit for Kayleigh's grandfather's funeral next day.

His wife Karen had made him aware that Kayleigh had been sent home from Alderman Quilley School in the morning of the last day of term. Kayleigh had her own door key and was in the house alone because her mother was working.

He said: "When I got home I went to put the shopping away and shouted up the stairs 'Kayleigh, Kayleigh' really quite loud and there was no answer."

Crying, he described how he had found her door locked and guessed that something might be seriously wrong. He kicked the door twice and it flew open. He grabbed her legs and to relieve the pressure and unbuckled the belt but when the emergency services arrived she was pronounced dead.
