Spacecraft uncover secrets of solar wind

A flotilla of four orbiting spacecraft has given scientists their first clear glimpse of the shock wave produced when particles pouring out of the Sun collide with the Earth's magnetic field.

The impact of the solar wind can cause magnetic storms capable of knocking out power and communication systems on Earth, as well as satellites.
