Engaged couples have taken the plunge in Thailand on Valentine's Day by getting married under the sea.

Seventy-two men and women in Thailand have exchanged vows and registered their weddings under water in a ceremony organised by Bangkok tour agencies to promote tourism.

Wearing wedding apparel atop of diving gear, they dived 15 metres into the Andaman Sea, exchanged rings and signed waterproof marriage registration documents with special pens.

The mass ceremony involved 34 foreign and two Thai couples at the southern beach resort of Koh Kradan, about 800 kilometres south of Bangkok.
