38 miners feared dead in flooded pit

Indian authorities fear that 38 miners trapped in a flooded colliery are dead.

The miners were trapped in the Bagdigi colliery, near Dhanbad, when an estimated 60 million gallons of water flooded in from a neighbouring pit.

Divers are being hired to search for survivors or bodies of the miners who were nearly 800 feet underground.

Water pumps are being used but it will take another 48 hours before rescuers can look for the miners on foot.

Boring operations have been carried out to try and make contact with the men but without success. Pit managers say it's still possible the men may have survived if they managed to reach a higher level of the seam they were working.
