Teenager arrested after baby's body found in briefcase

A teenager has been arrested after the body of a new-born baby was found in a briefcase behind her bed.

Police in South Africa's Northern Province say the 14-year-old is suspected of killing her own child after giving birth without her parent's knowledge.

They were alerted when her parents found the baby after smelling "something funny".

According to Independent Online, Inspector Moatshe Ngoepe said: "She gave birth to the baby on Tuesday and after that she allegedly locked the baby in a briefcase and put the case behind her bed."

The girl is currently under police guard at the Malamulele Hospital and is due to appear in Malamulele magistrate's court tomorrow.
