Philippine president Joseph Estrada has refused to step down after being given a deadline of 10pm GMT to resign from office.

Philippine president Joseph Estrada has refused to step down after being given a deadline of 10pm (Irish time) to resign from office.

Vice president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has declared herself commander in chief of the armed forces and high-level military and political allies have abandoned Estrada amid fears of an impending coup.
