Police chase 80-year-old granny at 100mph

An 80-year-old grandmother is alleged to have driven at more than 100 miles per hour past South African policemen and then ignored their demands to stop.

Joan Bonsall is said to be suffering from shock and amnesia after crashing into a toll barrier as police gave chase.

It's believed she was heading for a doctor's appointment when she got lost, and ended up on the wrong road.

As officers chased she lost control of her car as she approached the barrier which police had asked to be closed to stop her.

She could now face charges of speeding, failing to stop and reckless driving.

KwaZulu-Natal traffic spokesman Vijen Murugan says Ms Bonsall is from Pietermaritzburg.

He said: "The officers gave chase and asked other emergency vehicles in the area to be on the look-out for the grey-haired widow.

"A police patrol car and a Tolcon security vehicle joined the chase and staff at the toll plaza were ordered to lower the boom gates."
