Bush nominates new Labour Secretary

George W Bush is to nominate Elaine Chao to become Secretary of Labour after Linda Chavez withdrew her nomination for the post.

The new candidate is a former Peace Corps director and the wife of a Republican senator.

Mrs Chavez's decision follows the disclosure that she housed an illegal immigrant from Guatemala in the early 1990s. She admitted she was aware that the Guatemalan woman was an illegal immigrant.
