Woman killed following landslide in Wales

A woman has been killed and a number of other people are feared injured after several cars fell over cliffs following a landslide in North Wales.

It is believed that the cars fell following the landslide at the Lleyn Peninsula near Nefyn.

Police and rescue services and an RAF rescue helicopter are at the scene.

It is not known whether the cars were parked at the time or how many people were in them.

The dead woman is thought to have been in one of two cars which plunged some 40 feet on to the beach at Nefyn, on the Lleyn Peninsula, in north Wales.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: "A landslide has occurred on Lon y Traeth, Nefyn, on the Lleyn Peninsula.

"The location is on the beach road below the cliffs. All the emergency services have been called to the scene.

There is a danger of further landslides and the area is not yet fully secure.

A North Wales Police spokesman has confirmed a tide is expected and that rescue teams are combing the rubble for further casualties.

"There is nothing to suggest anyone else is under there but we have got search and rescue dogs out just to make sure."

He says it is still unclear how many cars had been swept over the cliff on to the beach below nor could he confirm reports that the fatality was out walking at the time of the landslide.
