Israeli civilian shot while working on border with Lebanon

An Israeli civilian has been shot and wounded while working on a fence on the border with Lebanon.

The Israeli army says it returned fire, but did not immediately disclose the man's condition.

After the shooting near the Israeli community of Shtula, Israeli helicopters were sent into the air over the border, military officials said on condition of anonymity.

Lebanese security officials had no immediate comment on the incident.

Tensions have been high on the border since Israel withdrew May 24 from a zone it had occupied in south Lebanon for 18 years in an effort to prevent cross-border attacks.

On Saturday, Israeli soldiers shot and killed a Lebanese man when he tried to climb over the border fence during an anti-Israel demonstration.

Israel has warned Syria, the main power broker in Lebanon, that it will be held responsible for any escalation of attacks from the Lebanese side of the border. And Iran has said it will respond to any Israeli strike at Syria.
