Police said a 26-year-old man attacked a centre for disabled people in Sagamihara, then turned himself in, according to Kyodo news agency.

Another 45 people were reported to have been injured in the attack.

Police told local media that 911 calls started pouring in from staff just after 2.30am local time, claiming that they had spotted a man with a knife on the grounds.

He eventually broke into the building with the knife and began targeting people inside.

At around 3am a man reportedly turned himself in to the police, saying: “I did it.”

According to some reports, the man was a former employee at the facility.
