QUIRKY WORLD ... Johnson snookered as son makes a balls of victory video

ENGLAND: Joe Johnson has revealed his video of his snooker World Championship triumph was lost — when one of his sons taped a He-Man film over it.

QUIRKY WORLD ... Johnson snookered as son makes a balls of victory video

Johnson won the 1986 Crucible tournament as a 150-1 outsider, beating Steve Davis in the final having earlier seen off Terry Griffiths and Tony Knowles. He recorded the television coverage of the final but when he dug out the VHS tape years later, he was in for a shock.

“It was for my eldest daughter,” Johnson told the Daily Mail. “It was years after I’d won. I’d never thought to watch it back but her and her boyfriend wanted to see it so I said I’d find the tape. The tape goes in and we are all sat around.

“We could watch the last couple of frames and the presentation, do it as a family, you know? Quite nice. Then on it comes, He-Man: Masters Of The Universe. Where’s my snooker?”

Name dropping

Czechia: Officials in the Czech Republic have decided their country’s name is a little too unwieldy, and have agreed to adopt a shortened version.

The nation will use the name Czechia in English, Tschechien in German, or Tchequie in French — all translations of the Czech word Cesko.

The foreign ministry said a one-word name is more practical and flexible for various uses.

President Milos Zeman, prime minister Bohuslav Sobotka, speakers of both chambers of parliament, and the foreign and defence ministers have endorsed the new name — although some critics say that it could be confused with the Russian republic of Chechnya.

Back from the dead

ENGLAND: The David Gest Is Not Dead, But Alive With Soul music tour will go ahead as planned, even though the reality star has died.

Gest, the former husband of Liza Minnelli, was found dead in a five-star London hotel on Tuesday.

He had been due to tour the UK in the musical show, starting in York on July 1. The soul event will go ahead in his honour.

Jail break doesn’t wash

USA: A Texas county jail inmate who escaped custody while receiving treatment in a hospital was found in the dishwasher of his girlfriend’s apartment in boxer shorts and wearing handcuffs with the chain severed, a sheriff’s department said.

“He took out the racks and made himself a nice cubby hole,” said chief deputy Glenn Blank of the Jasper County Sheriff’s office in East Texas.

The inmate, Wesley Evans, 20, was captured and taken back into custody after an escape lasting about 24 hours.

More than nine lives

ENGLAND: A lucky black cat has made a “miraculous” recovery after suffering 30 separate shotgun wounds.

Three-year-old Puss-Puss was found earlier this month, dragging her paws and covered in blood, after disappearing from her home in Ardleigh, Essex, for about a week.

She was rushed to a vet where X-rays revealed she had pellet injuries all over her body. RSPCA inspectors said she will have to have her eye removed but has otherwise made a remarkable recovery.

Cheeky move

USA: A school principal decided not to punish the girls who arranged for a male stripper to perform at their high school’s synchronised swimming club banquet.

Officials said the 14- and 15-year-old girls hired the stripper as a joke and that the performer did not get totally naked during the event at Des Moines Social Club in Iowa. A club employee interrupted the performance and asked the stripper to leave. Roosevelt High School head Kevin Biggs said the girls did nothing illegal and did not violate the conduct code.
