NASA captures incredible images of the moon's shadow reflecting on the Earth

A gif created by NASA has shown the moon’s shadow crossing over the Earth during last week’s eclipse over Asia.

The images were captured by the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite and shows the moon’s shadow moving over Indonesia and Australia, all the while moving in the same direction as Earth rotates.

The gif was created from 13 images captured by the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) onboard the DSCOVR satellite.

Speaking on the agency’s website NASA’s project scientist for DSCOVR Adam Szabo said, “What is unique for us is that being near the Sun-Earth line, we follow the complete passage of the lunar shadow from one edge of the Earth to the other.”

“A geosynchronous satellite would have to be lucky to have the middle of an eclipse at noon local time for it. I am not aware of anybody ever capturing the full eclipse in one set of images or video.”
