QUIRKY WORLD... No poopy talk, demands town’s new mayor, 3
“I told him to be nice when you talk to people and don’t say any poopy talk,” Robert Tufts said, relaying the conversation he had with his younger brother James after he became ceremonial mayor of Dorset, Minnesota.
James was named mayor of the town of 22 residents during the annual Taste of Dorset food festival. His name was drawn from a bucket during a $1 raffle to become mayor for a year, taking over for his brother Robert, who served as mayor for two years.
“I’m doing pretty good,” James said, adding that he likes being mayor.
Anyone can become mayor of Dorset. Other candidates have included a local rooster who unfortunately met his demise before the drawing was held.
Wild jackdaws are able to recognise individual human faces and may be able to tell when predators are looking directly at them.
Researchers at the universities of Exeter and Cambridge studied the birds in nest boxes for the work, which is published in the journal Animal Behaviour.
The team found the jackdaws could tell apart two masks worn by the same person.
A warm welcome was waiting for the playful baboon Luka who was rescued and returned to Macedonia’s largest zoo after he was snatched by captors.
Police say the 18-month-old crowd favourite was abducted on Monday from Skopje Zoo by captors who cut nets at a zoo enclosure and drove him by taxi to Kavadarci, about 80km south of the Macedonian capital.
Authorities said the ginger-haired animal was found four hours later after witnesses had alerted police.
Two people have been arrested and charged with burglary-related offences. Police did not comment on that one of the suspects was a 26-year-old woman who had abducted the animal to please her young daughter.
It wasn’t happy hour, but the beer was flowing on southbound Interstate 75 when a Budweiser truck overturned.
The Florida USA Highway Patrol says that beer cans were strewn along the highway north of Tampa after 23-year-old truck driver Malcolm Jamal Wilcox of Fernandina Beach became distracted by a small dog riding in the cab and lost control of the vehicle.
The truck went onto the outside shoulder and the driver overcorrected, crossed the highway, and hit the centre median guardrail before overturning.
Much of the cargo spilled onto the road, forcing troopers to close the southbound lanes in Hernando County for more than three hours.
Troopers say Wilcox was cited for careless driving. No one was injured in the crash.
A pet parrot has been turning heads by hitching daily rides on the back of his best friend — a dog.
Far from sending the fur flying, Dudley the Staffordshire bull terrier and Cracker the African Grey have been getting on like birds of a feather for years, says owner Bernard Chamberlain, who is known as Bunny.
He said he had little choice but to smooth any potential for ruffled feathers when the 53-year-old first took Dudley on as a favour to a relative four years ago.
