The American star, wearing a short black suit, opened the show with her track Blank Space.
The ceremony, shown live on ITV, was held at the O2 Arena in London.
Among the guests at the event were Kanye West and Madonna.
The first award, for British male solo artist, was presented by Rita Ora and Orlando Bloom to Ed Sheeran.
Accepting his award, Sheeran said: “That’s a good way to start the night” and dedicated the win to one of his staff, Deirdre, who worked with him on his first Brits in 2011.
The second award – for British group – was presented by Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page to rock duo Royal Blood beating X Factor heartthrobs One Direction in the process.
Guitarist Mike Kerr said: “This is a huge surprise for us. It’s probably more of a surprise for everyone here because you may not know who we are.”
Next up was Sam Smith who performed his debut single Lay Me Down.
The award forbest international female solo artist was presented by Lewis Hamilton and Ellie Goulding to Taylor Swift.
The US star picked up her first Brit award, telling the audience: “I’ve been coming to England and playing shows for eight years and this is my first Brit award. I’m so happy”.
She also paid tribute to Sheeran, saying: “Honestly I know I wouldn’t be up here if it wasn’t for one of my best friends who took me to pubs and taught me to make a good cup of tea and taught me everything I know about the UK”.
Meanwhile, Madonna had a bit of a wardrobe malfunction on the night, and not the way we’d expect.
Reports suggest the star was dragged to the ground when her dancers tried to pull off her cape but she managed to carry on with her performance.
