Egypt frees reporter held for a year after ‘sham’ trial

Al-Jazeera English reporter Peter Greste has left Egypt after the president approved his deportation following more than a year behind bars in a case that was widely condemned by rights groups.

The Australian national left on an EgyptAir flight to Larnaca, Cyprus.

Greste was released following a presidential “approval”, officials said, following a new deportation law passed last year.
