A newly hired teacher is being hailed a hero after she struggled with a teenage killer during a gun rampage in the cafeteria of a Washington state high school.

First-year social studies teacher Megan Silberberger intervened in Friday’s attack at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, 50km north of Seattle, teachers union president Randy Davis said.

Silberberger intercepted Jaylen Fryberg, 15, as he paused, possibly to reload.
