Faithfull: Iconic singer Morrison killed by lethal batch of heroin
Conspiracy theories have surrounded the death of Morrison ever since his body was found in a bath in his Paris apartment in 1971.
Morrison was a known serial abuser of drugs and alcohol, but an autopsy was never performed on the 27-year-old’s body.
In an interview withMojo magazine, Faithfull revealed that her then-boyfriend, Jean de Breteuil, accidentally killed Morrison by giving him drugs that were too strong.
De Breteuil was known as a heroin dealer to the stars, including the Rolling Stones and the Doors, and Faithfull accompanied him on a trip to Paris in 1971.
De Breteuil went to visit Morrison in his apartment on Rue Beautreillis in the Marais district of Paris but Faithfull, aged 24 at the time and battling her own addictions, decided to stay back in their own hotel.
“I could intuitively feel trouble,” Faithfull told the magazine. “I thought, I’ll take a few Tuinal [barbiturates] and I won’t be there.”
“And he went to see Jim Morrison and killed him. I mean, I’m sure it was an accident. Poor bastard. The smack was too strong? Yeah. And he died... Everybody connected to the death of this poor guy is dead now. Except me.”
De Breteuil fell victim himself to a heroin overdose only weeks later while in Morocco.
An autopsy was never carried out on Morrison’s body. The French death certificate only states he died of “natural causes”.
It had been previously claimed by former New York Times journalist Sam Bernett that Morrison had died of a heroin overdose in the toilet of a nightclub he was managing, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus on the French capital’s Left Bank, and the death was covered up by drug dealers who transferred Morrison’s body back to his flat.
The singer is buried in Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris, and is visited by thousands of music fans from all over the world each year.
Faithfull also spoke of singer Amy Winehouse, who also died aged 27 from drugs.
“Amy was very, very wary of me,” she said. “She knew that I knew [about her drug use] and she didn’t want me to say anything.
“There’s a level of narcissism which is all mixed up with self-hatred. I know it well. It’s like a glass wall between you and the world, so that all the love that everybody pours on to you, you don’t feel it.”
