One-year-old child dies after father locks him in car for eight hours

The boy, who was 22 months old, was accidentally locked in his father's car for over eight hours.

According to police, the man forgot his son was in the car and did not drop him off at day care as he was supposed to.

The man drove to work instead, unwittingly locking the toddler in his vehicle.

It wasn't until over eight hours later, when the man had finished work, that he realised what had happened.

He found his son still strapped into the car seat and was now unresponsive.

Temperatures had reached 32 degrees celsius that day, with authorities estimating the temperature inside the vehicle could have reached 60 degrees celsius.

Dale Hamilton, who witnesses the moment the father found his child in the car, told Eyewitness News 3 that he saw the man attempting CPR on his son.

"He hopped out of his car. I didn’t know what he was doing at the time," Mr Hamilton explained.

"But, he eventually pulled the child out of the car seat. I guess he was trying to un-restrain him. He pulled him out of the car seat, laid him on the ground and was trying to resuscitate him."

Other bystanders also tried to help, but their efforts proved to be too late for the child.

Mr Hamilton also said the scene was extremely difficult to watch, the distressed father repeating "what have I done, what have I done".

The distraught man eventually had to be restrained at the scene and has now been charged with murder according to Cobb County jail records.
