QUIRKY WORLD... BBC official’s expenses claim takes the cake

Head of comedy Shane Allen, who is paid a salary of £207,000, claimed the money back for 48 cakes last year.

He also claimed £211.85 for a leaving party for an unnamed member of staff attended by 15 people.

FLORIDA MAN HID DRUGS UNDER ‘STOMACH FAT’

USA: A Florida man who weighs about 32 stone faces multiple charges after sheriff’s deputies say he hid cocaine and 23g of marijuana under his “stomach fat”.

According to a new release, a Volusia County sheriff’s deputy stopped a vehicle after noticing that the passenger wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

Officials say 42-year-old Christopher Mitchell told the deputy that he’s too big to wear a seatbelt.

A police dog detected the presence of drugs in the vehicle. Deputies say they also found a handgun and $7,000 (€5,168) in cash. Mitchell and the driver were arrested.

ALL IN THE NAME

USA: Maybe it’s the ultimate sign that New York City’s up-and-coming borough has finally arrived. Brooklyn is now one of the most popular baby names in the US.

Over the past two decades, Brooklyn as a name for girls has surged from number 912 to the top 30 in each of the last three years. Some credit football star David Beckham and his wife, Victoria, for naming their son Brooklyn. Some cite model and actress Brooklyn Decker. Others point to Girls and the many other TV shows and movies that tap into the borough’s gritty, cool vibe.

But of the 41 states where Brooklyn is now the most popular girl’s name beginning with B, New York is not among them. Brooklynites say naming your child Brooklyn is strictly for out-of towners.

MAYORAL DEFEAT

USA: The mayor of New York City was forced to sing ‘I Love LA’ on live TV after losing a sporting bet with his Los Angeles counterpart.

Bill de Blasio lost his wager with Eric Garcetti after the New York Rangers lost ice hockey’s showpiece Stanley Cup to the LA Kings.

Mr de Blasio, wearing a black T-shirt that said “I love LA”, was in a studio in Times Square, New York City, and his appearance was beamed by satellite to the Jimmy Kimmel Live show, being filmed in Los Angeles with Mr Garcetti in attendance.

BODY ART

ENGLAND: Fans of artistic duo the Chapman Brothers will be able to wear their art on their sleeve after they offered tattoos to members of the public who finance their latest show.

The pair, whose previous work includes dressing mannequins in Nazi uniforms and using hundreds of toy soldiers to depict horrific war crimes, need to raise £25,000 (€31,317) to fund an exhibition at the Jerwood Gallery in their home town of Hastings in East Sussex.

The brothers, Jake and Dinos, are also offering designer loo rolls, signed posters, and visits to their studio in exchange for cash.

TATTOO CLUE

USA: Police have released an image of a distinctive tattoo in an effort to identity a man whose dismembered body was found partially encased in cement inside a garage behind a Detroit home.

The cut-up corpse was found on May 30 by a neighbour who noticed an overwhelming foul odour and called police. An officer discovered some of the parts, after opening one of several plastic containers in the garage.

Police said in a statement that the victim had a tattoo on his forearm reading, “RIP Deisha,” with “8/23/81- 4/7/09” underneath.

A cause of death hasn’t been determined. Police have said a man who may have been living or squatting inside the home has been arrested on an unrelated charge.
