The University of Arizona Medical Centre surgeons worked for 10 hours to remove the massive liposarcoma, a cancer in the abdominal muscle, that had invaded Marcey DiCaro’s inferior vena cava — the body’s largest vein.
“After we dissected the tumour off the inferior vena cava, it looked like Swiss cheese,” said Dr Angela Echeverria, general surgery chief resident, who performed the procedure.
