QUIRKY WORLD... Artist goes nuts for English football stars
Artist Quentin Devine has gone nuts at the prospect of the World Cup and carved five faces of English football legends on a handful of Brazils.
Armed with a scalpel, a magnifying glass and a 99p bag of Brazil Nuts, he spent around four days on each one to perfect his portraits of Gary Lineker, Paul Gascoigne, David Beckham, Alan Shearer, and current England star Wayne Rooney.
He said he worked through over 50 nuts in the challenge, set by TV channel Dave to celebrate its World Cup coverage, before he got it right.
He said: “My final piece, Gary Lineker, proved to be a tough nut to crack with his large ear span reducing the already tiny surface area I had to work with.
“After over 20 attempts, many broken ears and all hope lost, I finally perfected it.”
A woman who dropped out of Connecticut’s Quinnipiac University was arrested on Sunday night after admitting to calling in two bomb threats in an effort to keep her family from learning she had dropped out of school, police said.
Danielle Shea, 22, of Quincy, Massachusetts, made the threats after arriving at the ceremony in a cap and gown with her mother, who didn’t know she had dropped out, and told police she “panicked” when relatives noticed her name was not on the list of graduates.
Police said Shea called in two bomb threats to the library so the graduation ceremony would be cancelled. Instead the Sunday evening ceremony was delayed 90 minutes and moved to a different campus of the university.
Local police responded to the Quinnipiac University library as an estimated 5,000 people, including the 388 graduates, evacuated the area and quickly moved to the indoor location, according to John Morgan, university spokesman.
“We cannot speculate what she was thinking,” said Morgan. “But we had to act quickly in the interest of safety.”
Police said they tracked the caller down by tracing the phone number she called from.
Shea was charged with threatening in the first degree and falsely reporting an incident. She was detained at police headquarters on $20,000 (€14,500) bail and is set to appear in court on May 30.
A judge has returned a 17kg feline to its owner after DNA testing failed to establish conclusively whether it was a pure breed bobcat.
New Jersey municipal court Judge Damian Murray ruled that Ginny Fine can regain custody of Rocky. A DNA test found the cat’s mother was 98% bobcat, but could not determine its father’s lineage.
Ms Fine would not have been able to get the cat back without a permit if it was a purebred bobcat. Rocky has been held since April 7 at Popcorn Park Zoo in Lacey after it went missing for 12 days from its home.
A group of snowboarders suing one of the last US ski resorts to ban the sport are arguing in a legal action that it is not only discriminatory and based on stereotypes, but also encourages “hostile and divisive skier-versus-snowboarder attitudes”.
The snowboarders filed the action regarding national forest lands that make up most of the Alta ski area in the mountains east of Salt Lake City, Utah.
But Alta lawyers say the decision to promote a snowboarder-free experience to lure skiers is within the ski area’s rights and violates no constitutional rights
