China: Two giant pandas born in the US have arrived safely at their new home in China.

Zoo Atlanta officials say five-year-old Xi Lan and three-year-old Po arrived yesterday at the Chengdu research base of giant panda breeding.

They will be placed in routine quarantine for a short period before moving into their new habitats.

ENGLAND: Labour’s new election guru has been handed his first mission: learning to spell the party leader’s name.

David Axelrod met Ed Miliband and the shadow cabinet after being brought in to beef up their 2015 poll prospects. But the ex-Barack Obama aide was left red-faced after spelling his latest client’s name “Milliband” in a post on Twitter.

And he may well have been shocked when he signed up to Mr Miliband’s own feed to find posts announcing the Opposition leader was resigning. The account being “followed” by Mr Axelrod is a spoof that uses the same incorrect spelling.

USA: An eight-year-old Kansas girl is being hailed for her quick thinking after she took control of the family’s SUV when her mother fell unconscious at the wheel during their ride to school.

Abby Porter and her mother, Shelly, were headed to school in Riverton when Shelly had a medical emergency and passed out.

Police officer Jimmy Hamilton noticed the SUV weaving along at about 20mph and saw Abby at the wheel alongside her unconscious mom. He positioned his car in front of the SUV, and Abby steered into the patrol car until they both stopped. The police department in Galena, about 150 miles south of Kansas City, is presenting Abby with a plaque for “outstanding bravery in a life-threatening situation”.

ENGLAND: A 5,000-strong swarm of honeybees caused a buzz by nesting on a shop front in the middle of central London.

The bevy of bees honed in on a discount sign on the window of Topshop in Victoria Street, turning the fashion store display into a carpet of insects. It is understood the unusual nesting place was picked by the queen bee, who landed there first and was quickly followed by her devoted colony.

Scores of Londoners stopped to take photographs of the unusual sight, in the heart of busy central London. Tony Mann, a project manager at nearby John Lewis and a trained bee keeper, dashed over to the shop to help lead efforts to smoke the European honeybee colony out.

USA: A 34-year-old woman posed as a teenager to enrol at a private Texas high school, authorities said.

Longview police said Charity Johnson was arrested after telling officers she was “Charite Stevens”. She was being held in Gregg County jail on $500 bond for allegedly giving false information to police.

Police had been called to an apartment when the person Johnson was staying with said she no longer wanted her living there. Police gave her a trespass warning. The principal at a small private school in Texas said Johnson enrolled in October with a guardian and filled out paperwork indicating she was 15. Police said she is 34, although jail records list her as 31.

USA: A university in northwest Ohio is being forced to replace almost all its grass after weedkiller was applied to lawns instead of fertiliser.

University of Findlay spokeswoman Brianna Patterson says the chemical was applied to campus lawns during the last week of April and it will take several weeks to reseed and re-sod the affected areas.

Patterson said the mistake is unfortunate because of how hard the university works to keep the campus looking nice.
