Singer Paul Simon and wife arrested

Singer Paul Simon and his wife, Edie Brickell, have been arrested on disorderly conduct charges.

Police in New Canaan, Connecticut, in the US, said officers responded to investigate a “family dispute” involving the singers on Saturday night.

Simon, 72, and Brickell, 47, were released and an arraignment is scheduled for later in Norwalk.

Simon is a member of The Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame.

He and Brickell were married in 1992.

Last week, Simon unveiled a tapestry dedicated to Seamus Heaney at Dublin Airport, and also headlined a commemorative concert in Dublin as part of celebrations to mark the late poet’s life.

Police chief Leon Krolikowski said a caller from the singers’ home had dialled police on Saturday night and hung up.

Officers found minor injuries and believed it was a case of domestic violence, he said.

Simon and Brickell were given a misdemeanour summons and one of them agreed to leave, he said.

“There was aggressiveness on both sides,” he said.

“They’re both victims and they have children involved and we’re trying to be very cautious of that.”

Brickell is best known for the 1988 song What I Am recorded with her band the New Bohemians.

The pair won a Grammy for best American Roots song in January. The two are touring and are due to perform next on May 9.
